Basic - Months of the Year - Russian
This section will teach you how to say the months of the year in Russian.
The terms for months are the easiest part of the Russian calendar vocabulary because they are very similar to the months in English. Note that in Russian, the months start with a small letter unless they are in the beginning of a sentence. In addition, the gender of all months in Russian is masculine.
January – январь (yeen-VAHR'). Christmas Day is observed, on 7 January, as a public holiday according to the Julian calendar used by the Russian Orthodox Church.
February – февраль (fee-VRAHL'). The Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated on 23th February, and is a day of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
March - март (mahrt). Russian celebrates International Women's Day on 8th March.
April - апрель (ah-PRYEHL'). Cosmonautics Day is a holiday celebrated in Russia and some other former USSR countries on April 12. Later on, it was declared as the International Day of Human Space Flight in dedication of the first manned space flight made on April 12, 1961 by the 27-year-old Russian Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
May - май (mahy). May 9, Russia celebrates the victory over Nazi Germany, while remembering those who died in order to achieve it. A military parade is held in Moscow to celebrate the day.
June - июнь (ee-YOON'). Russia Day is the national holiday of the Russian Federation, celebrated on June 12. If the day falls on a weekend, the public holiday shifts to the following Monday.
July – июль (ee-YOOL'). Ivan Kupala Day (Feast of St. John the Baptist), celebrate at 6/7 July in the Gregorian or New Style calendar. The celebration relates to the summer solstice when nights are the shortest and includes a number of Pagan rituals.
August – август (AHV-goost). The Savior of the Apple Feast Day is an Eastern Slavic folk holiday, which is observed on August 19, falling on the Feast of the Transfiguration.
September - сентябрь (seen-TYAHBR'). At first day of September is start of new school year. Also, in Russia that day is known as a Knowledge Day.
October – октябрь (ahk-TYAHBR'). At October, 1st is a Day of Senior Citizens in Russia.
November – ноябрь (nah-YAHBR'). National Unity Day is also known as Consolidation Day (as an alternative translation), which people in Russia celebrate on November 3 - November 4.
December - декабрь (dee-KAHBR'). At December, 31st, is the New Year’s Eve.
